Part of the beauty of executive coaching is how well it caters to each individual who undergoes the coaching. One of the things that make these coaching programs so personalized and unique is the use of performance appraisals, particularly a 360 degree appraisal. These are large, comprehensive reports that use the reviews written by several people who are in a position to observe the executive. These reviews are then evaluated along with a self-review.

Improving an Executive’s Performance

An appraisal of this type can accomplish what all appraisals are supposed to do but rarely actually do – force executives to see what their weaknesses are and to pledge to improve to get rid of those weaknesses. Imagine if all of your senior-level executives were able to steadily improve their performance throughout the coaching process and beyond. It would put your entire company in a better place to compete in the global marketplace.

By looking through the numerous reports that make up the 360 degree appraisal, weaknesses soon become apparent. With a single report, an executive may believe that talk of a weakness is a fluke or even just an unfriendly employee. But, seeing it from many sources can be just the thing needed to change the executive’s perceptions of the process. With this in front of him, it’s hard to deny that there’s a problem. Instead, the executive will be motivated to work with the coach and fix the problem.

Catering to an Executive’s Strengths

Just like an executive’s weaknesses, his strengths are also something that is important to the company. When the executive is aware of his strengths, thanks to the 360 degree appraisal, there is a strong motivation to take on tasks that require just those strengths. This benefits the company because the precise person who would be best at those tasks is the one who will volunteer for them.

An employee who is aware of his own strengths can be an enormous asset to a company. It gives him added confidence when it comes to those skill areas while encouraging him to take care of his weaknesses and to turn them into more strengths, which can only come after the 360 degree appraisal assessments. Those goals can help the employee to tackle problems with practice and effort.

Make More Profits from Better-Trained Employees

What a company sells is one thing, but who is selling it is often more important. The people who make up your company are the ones that define the way that everything is done within that company. When your employees have noticeable deficits in behavior or skill, these affect customers, partners, and clients and often mean a loss of business that costs the company in many ways. Aside from a loss of sales, it can lead to a loss of the company’s reputation as well.

A lack of interpersonal skills or being unable to recognize appropriate behaviors can cause untold problems within a company such as a hostile work environment, the exodus of key employees, or being a distraction in the office. With the 360 degree appraisal approach, you will have less distraction which means more work gets done in less time and more profits are possible. It also means that quality employees are retained because of an effective and harmonious workplace.

Executive coaching trains employees in a way that does more than simply teaching specific skills; it teaches them to train themselves. It gives them the tools they need to figure out when something is wrong and what steps need to be taken to correct it. When your employees can take care of problems before they affect the company, your business is in very safe hands.
